Splendor of Venice (Sept 14 & 16, 2014)

Antiphonal Music for 2 and 3 Choirs

Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli created a sensation in late 16th century Venice with their works for antiphonal choirs of singers and instruments. Hans Leo Hassler was one of many young composers who flocked to Venice to learn their style. Hassler went on to become the first composer to introduce the polychoral tradition he learned from the Gabrielis to his native Germany. We open our 19th season by celebrating Hassler's 450th birthday with a sampling of the glorious music of Gabrielis, Hassler, Schütz and others. The preeminent Canadian sackbut and string ensemble ¡Sacabuche! will join us on this special occasion!
